For a while now I have wanted to make a Terrarium as I think they make a cute alternative to flowers.
The kids were pretty keen to get on board and help out which was great as I think it’s always great to get them involved. We did our research and we spent a week or so looking at different types of succulents and cactus that we wanted to use in our Terrariums. Below is how to make a Terrarium at home
Materials you will need:
We set about making a list of the bits and bob’s we needed and off we went buying them (we made 2 Terrariums in total) Here’s what we bought:
An Iridescent glass bowl £4.99 from Home bargains
A Large glass vase £3.99 from Home bargains
Potting compost 10 Litre bag £1.75 from Wilko’s
Black stones in a net £1.75 from Wilko’s
White stones in a net £1.75 from wilko’s
Black stones in a jar £5.00 from Hobbycraft
Various succulents and Cactus £1.25-£1.50 from Wilko’s
Various Succulents and Cactus £1.49-£3.25 from Notcutts Garden Centre.
So now we had everything we needed it was time to get started.
Getting Started
First we placed the stones carefully at the bottom of the bowl, making sure we didn’t drop them in and smash the glass. This not only looks decorative but also helps with drainage of the soil.
Next we filled the bowl up with potting soil so it was about half full.
Ready for the Plants
We then made holes in the soil to pop our plants into. This was the tricky bit and resulted in me getting spiked several times from the cactus. I potted the cactus first and then the succulents around them as I found that the easiest way.
Almost Finished
We sprinkled a little bit more soil around the plants once they were in place and then covered the soil with more stones. Then we watered the plants lightly and placed them in the window in the sunlight. We water them lightly once a week.
They really are a quick and easy make for kids and were great fun to do. All the kids had a great time making them.
