If you are looking got a day out then why not consider a day at Matlock Bath. We recently visited for the day and had a lovely time. We were really surprised by the amount of things that Matlock Bath had to offer. So if you are looking to keep the kids entertained or just have a mooch about, you will find plenty of things to do at Matlock Bath.
Matlock Bath
Matlock Bath is a very popular small village in Derbyshire. Set in a steep limestone gorge Matlock Bath sits along the River Derwent. Whilst being popular for its cable cars, thermal springs and motorcycle gatherings. Matlock Bath also feels like a seaside resort as it boast lots of fish and chip shops as well as amusement arcades, ice cream shops and novelty gift shops.
Parking
There are plenty of council car parks as well as road side parking if you are lucky. Road side parking is limited to 1 hour of less so would not give you much time to have a look around. We visited on a Sunday and it was really busy so the car parks were filling up really fast. The car parks were reasonably priced. We paid £4.50 for 3 hours which i didn’t feel was too bad and it gave us a good amount of time to have a mooch about.
Toilets
Whilst we were there i only found one lot of public toilets. These were situated along the river bank. There was a 40p charge to use the toilets. Next to the toilets was a seating area with a host of information and photos about Matlock in the past and the fallen soldiers. This made a very interesting read.
Shopping
As you walk along the main street you are met with a variety of small independent shops. The shops range from gift shops that you would expect see at a sea side town. Selling the usual items such as mugs, keyrings, wooden signs and tea towels. There is also material shops and an old apothecary shop. Matlock Bath has plenty of ice cream parlours, so if the weather is hot you are able to buy ice cream, you can also buy donuts and even dinky donuts.
Lovers Walks
Matlock bath has a series of footpaths along the riverside and up and over the cliffs, these have been named The Lover’s Walks.
The Peak District Dales Woodlands form part of the Special Area for Conservation. This means that they contain habitat which is or could be rare or threatened. The woodlands in the Peak District Dales are known to be one of the best examples of ‘Tilio-Acerion forests of slopes and ravines in the UK.
Over the River Derwent is a river bridge that dates back to 1969. This bridge was built to join The Lovers’ Walk to Derwent Gardens. Boat Hire
If you fancy a lovely relaxing half hour on the river then why not hire one of the various boats available. Boats available are pedalo boats, motor boats and rowing boats. Prices do vary depending on how many people are in your party, which boat you wish to hire and the length of time you want to be on the river. Arcades
Along the main street there are numerous amusement arcade that you expect to see at a traditional seaside town. Perfect to pop inside and have a quick go on the arcade games, you might even win a teddy!
Heights Of Abraham
If you want to see some amazing sights then you need to take a ride on the cable cars at the Heights Of Abraham. You start your visit with a cable car ride right above the Derwent Valley. The ride takes you to the summit of Masson Hill. From here you can enjoy cavern tours in the Great Masson Cavern or the Great Rutland Cavern. You can also enjoy the heritage gardens, historic buildings, exhibitions, playgrounds and much more. This will provide a fun packed day for all the family.
There is plenty of choice for refreshments, you can choose from the Vista Restaurant and Bar or Terrace Cafe, both are family friendly. If you just want a drink or ice cream you can check out the Local ice cream that is served. Head down to the Tavern, which serves beer, soft drinks and ice cream. The Snap Tin offers hot and cold drinks, snacks and cake for you to enjoy. Or you can enjoy your own picnic, there is plenty of seating provided.

Gulliver’s Kingdom
If you are a thrill seeker and looking for a fun day out then Gulliver’s Kingdom is the perfect choice. With over 20 rides to choose from there is something for all the family to enjoy. You can ride all day and also enjoy lots of themed play areas such as Animal Barn, Adventure Village and Lilliput Land Castle.
If you are hungry then you are well catered for with a choice of Canyon Grill, Tamu Feast, Costa Coffee, Chicken Shack and Bourbon Diner. The food establishments are located around the theme park so be sure to check out the map for their locations.

Matlock Bath Aquarium & Exhibition
Matlock Bath Aquarium and Exhibition is perfect to break up your day. It allows you to take a trip down memory lane and look at Matlock Bath from the past, along with fossils, the petrifying well and the aquarium. Situated along the North Parade it is easily accessible and a great all weather attraction.
Prices here really reasonable with entry costing just £6.90 and under 4s are free.
Bonkers Illumination Golf
Looking to have some fun then why not pop in and have a game at Bonkers Illumination Golf. Situated on the North Parade, Bonkers illuminated Golf offers 9 holes of illuminated mini golf. Great for a bit of family competition, especially if the weather outside is not great. No need to book so you can just walk in and play.
Bonkers Illumination Bar is also situated in the same building as the golf, allowing you to enjoy a celebratory drink after your game of golf. Do not want to play golf, then no problem you can still enjoy cocktails at the Bonkers Illumination Bar.
Another hidden gem is they also have 3 Retro Arcade Game Machines. So try your luck at some of the retro arcade games from the past. These include Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Street Fighter, Super Mario and Sonic. In the Retro Arcade there is a game for every player.

Lead Mining Museum
Matlock Bath is home to the Peak District Lead Mining Museum. Situated in The Grand Pavilion on the South Parade The Lead Mining Museum is perfect for all the family. Housing over 6000 objects from the local area. You can see objects such as personal objects that belonged to miners, rocks and minerals, pumping engines, photographs, maps and documents.
The Lead mining museum also offers a guided tour of the Temple Mine. The Temple Mine is a 1920’s working lead and fluorspar mine. The Temple Mine is situated across the road from the Lead Museum. Visiting the Temple Mine is a great opportunity to experience rocks and minerals. tools used by miners, as well as a rare 1936 locomotive. Tours of the Temple Mine must be booked in advance.

Matlock Bath Illuminations
Every year Matlock bath hosts their illuminations. This is a really fun packed family event. It also features a spectacular parade of illuminated boats that are situated along the River Derwent.
The 2026 season opens on Saturday 12th September when it holds its preview night. The boats are then available to be seen every Saturday and Sunday from Saturday the 19th September all the way to Sunday 1st November. Plus it also runs on and additional night which is Friday 30th October.
